![]() iso file this bears some visual similarity to Windows, and is not as resource hungry (working memory) as other desktop environments, hence is more suitable for elder computers. The approach which was suitable for me was to pick one distribution (e.g., Linux Mint with Xfce desktop environment, download page) to get an. So the two approaches are better described as complementary to each other, the by portableapps more suitable e.g. Somewhat related are the programs by portableapps, But as the programs do not install into the operating system, one needs "some extra" (manual inspection, or an other program) to keep them updated. And as I just see today - thanks to your post, the project includes entries for MiKTeX, TeXMaker, and TeXStudio, too. With chocolatey, an approach similar to the one in Linux became available to Windows. The more programs are installed/deinstalled in such a setup, the more difficult to maintain it. ![]() Then, you have/you had e.g., multiple interpreters for Python (a programming language), including their (sometimes again duplicated) dependencies. Here (i.e., in Windows), the approach is/was to provide executables which contain every library and file for an installation, regardless if an other program installed earlier already included these (internal) bells and whistles. ![]() Sometimes my impression is Linux' approach to organize applications with one (program) package manager (like apt) for Linux Debian) which checks and resolves dependencies, assists in the clean installation and deinstallation of programs across the whole OS, eases the updates of the programs) is something which was lacking for long for the Windows operating system. So now I'm stuck and I don't know how to fix my MiKTeX installation apart from just nuking Windows and starting again with a fresh image.Įdit: So, I just went extra hard in finding a huge bunch of duplicate folders (windows search instead of just manually perusing) and found out that the big folder (>1.5GB) was in %AppData%\Local\MiKTeX and "%AppData%\Local\MiKTeX 2.9" and deleted all those folders (including start menu folders and anything MiKTeX related I could find) then reinstalled with the installer and now everything works perfectly again! I tried the sfc /scannow trick which has brought up some errors in the past but I'm confident no errors existed when my install got borked. StackExchange solutions included making registry hacks and going into Program Files to find a folder that doesn't exist for me, so I didn't do any of that. the 'MiKTeX' 22.9 seems to uninstall when I uninstall 'MikTeX 2.9' from Control Panel (again, probably not the right place to do that but I didn't know).Īlso, weirdly, there are no MiKTeX folders in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files(x86) so I can't delete anything there (I can view hidden files in Explorer but still nada). The MiKTeX consoles for each version constantly error out with either internal errors or Windows API Error 5 errors so I can't properly update or uninstall them. I originally installed MiKTeX as part of installing TeXstudio (TeXstudio still works fine btw but I just can't generate PDFs now because of my borked install) and it worked absolutely fine for me for a long time.īut then I suspect it was me using winget to update (Using a Win10 system) MiKTeX that borked the install (though idk for sure), because now there's a version 22.9 installed under the name 'MiKTeX' and a version 2.9 installed under the name 'MiKTeX 2.9'.
